Pearl Harbor Survivor Serves as Memorial Parade Grand Marshal

Traditionally held on the Sunday before Memorial Day (this year May 22), Bellingham’s parade once again stepped off from the middle school and proceeded to the town common for the Memorial ceremony.
The Grand Marshal was 95-year-old Gerald Halterman, a Pearl Harbor survivor who was a Navy communications officer stationed in Hawaii on the USS Oklahoma. He transmitted the first radio message about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Four-hundred and twenty-nine of his shipmates on the USS Oklahoma were lost on that day, Dec. 7, 1941.
