Bellingham MA COA Announces May 2014 Events & Activities

Following is a list of events & activities slated at the Bellingham Senior Center. For more information on any of the following information, please call the senior center at 508-966-0398.
Cooking for One—Tue, May 6, 4–5:30 pm. This free class is limited to 10 people and you must sign up by calling 508-966-0398. Learn to cook healthful fresh foods into delicious meals, then get to relax and eat your creations. Foods and instructor—WFM Healthy Eating Specialist Dawn Berthelette— are provided by Whole Foods Market Bellingham.
YOGA— Tuesday, May 6, 13, 20 & 27, 5:30–7 pm, with instructor Susan Winters. Perfect class for those who can’t get here during the day—stop by on your way home from work. There are plenty of places to change into comfortable clothes, and mats are available for beginners. Cost is $5/class.
TAI CHI—Tuesday, May 6, 13, 20 & 27, 7:15–8:15pm. with instructor Jeanne Donnelly. A gentle exercise class for everyone; classes always have a warm-up and introduction to what Tai Chi is all about. This form of exercise is adaptable for those who are chair-bound. Cost is $5/class for seniors; $10/class for younger members.
Checkbook Checkup—Tuesday, May 13 & 27, 6pm. Dawn Marie Giardino, Asst. Manager of Rockland Bank & Trust, will meet with seniors who are having difficulty with either balancing checkbooks or budgeting money. With over 30 years’ experience in banking, Dawn Marie is well-versed in many areas. To establish the assistance needed, your first appointment is a 15- to 20-minute consultation. Genealogy Workshops—Tuesday, May 13 & 27 and Thursday, May 29, 6:30–8 pm, with Toni Picariello. Start a new hobby; research your family history at your own pace. Come to one or all of these free classes.
Healthcare Errors, Fraud and Abuse—Do you know that healthcare errors, fraud and abuse cost billions of dollars annually? Do you know that approximately 100,000 lives are lost each year because of healthcare errors? Learn the best practices of how to prevent, detect and report healthcare errors, fraud and abuse at the senior center on Thursday, May 15, 10–11 am. Get empowered! Sponsored by the MA Senior Medicare Patrol.
May Concert—Angela West will perform at the senior center on Thursday, May 15, 7 pm, singing songs from the 40s and 50s as well as country tunes. She loves to have the audience sing along. She has been performing for 35 years and is in the Country Hall of Fame of MA. Open to the public. Light snacks and sweets available. Call 508-966-0398 to register by May 14 and pay $1 admission; $5/pp on the day of the concert.
Mother’s Day Dinner Dance—An afternoon of dancing, great music, delicious food, and fun people on May 19, 11:30 am, at the Medway VFW, 123 Holliston St. A sit-down full-course stuffed-chicken-breast dinner is planned for noon; $17/pp. All area residents are invited; sign up at 40 Blackstone St, Bellingham or call 508-966-0398. (No refund if cancelled after April 18.) Party favors available for every lady in honor of Mother’s Day.
Genealogy Program—Tuesday, May 20, 11 am. This workshop will help you work on your family history whether you are just getting started or have hit a wall in your research. Explore how and where to research your family. There will be handouts and time for your Q & A. Seema Kenney will lead the session. She holds a certificate from Boson University in Genealogical Research. She is a member of the Upton Historical Society, the New England Historical Genealogical Society, and the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists. Program is free to those who sign up by May 16; after that, $5/pp. Limited to the first 20 attendees, so call now, 508-966-0398, to register.
Learning to Use Your Digital Camera Most Effectively—Thursday, May 8 & 15, 6–8 pm, with Nancy Bland of Walgreen’s photo department. Nancy has many years’ experience as a photographer and volunteers to share what she has learned at no charge. Call 508-966-0398 to reserve your space.
Bowling—The Bellingham COA Bowling League invites you to join in some fun, no-competition candlepin bowling on Tuesdays, 9:15 am, at Ryan Amusement Center, Route 109, Millis. The BCOA Candlepin Bowling League has been in existence since before 1993. The League bowled at Milford Fast Lanes until 1996, when the group moved to Crown Family Fun Center (now Ryan Amusement Center). Lots of laughs. Where can you go today for 3 strings of bowling, including shoes, for $7.25? (It was $4.50 in 1996.) Come check us out and have some fun.
