Devlin’s Tavern Offers Good Service, Good Food, Good Times

Devlin's Tavern owners Liz and Patrick Devlin

Devlin’s Punch… Fire and Ice… Purple Rain… Hot Damn!  All four—and a whole lot more—are on the menu at the recently-opened Devlin’s Tavern in Bellingham.  But it’s also about eating, and the menu offers a wide variety of choices from sandwiches and wraps to fajitas and fish and chips.

“I love what I do,” says co-owner Liz Devlin. “I love the people. When I’m tending bar it’s not just a job—it’s my favorite part of the business.”

Her husband and co-owner, Patrick, puts it this way: “Liz is the most amazing person, boss, bartender…always a smile on her face…she brings out the good in everybody.”

For the past nine years, they have run Liz’s Diamond Bar and Grille in nearby Hopedale. And it’s a successful business that has grown every year, according to Liz. In August, they opened Devlin’s Tavern at 15 North Main Street in Bellingham.

“WOW! Awesome staff. Great selection of cocktails (AWESOME selections of whiskeys & bourbons!!!) And double wow on the food,” says one poster on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

About the food, “Everything is fresh,” says Patrick, who singles out Chef Jake Pimental for praise. “He orders all the food, creates specials, works very hard and uses his imagination.” Jake supervises the operation of the kitchens at both restaurants owned by the Devlins.

Liz and Patrick live in Mendon, they have five grown children (and one grandchild), and they love the restaurant business. Liz has 25 years of experience and spends most days (and evenings) in one or both of her restaurants. Patrick is a full-time heavy-equipment operator by day and helps out at the restaurants at night.

Devlin’s Tavern is open seven days a week,  11am—1am. Helping to keep the restaurant open all these hours by attending to repair and maintenance issues is family friend Henry Daley. “We couldn’t do it without him,” says Patrick.

“Good Service…Good Food…Good Times” is the restaurant’s motto. “Banker, biker, family of four—we want everybody to be comfortable here,” explains Patrick. And the floor plan is large enough to accommodate a band on one side of the sprawling restaurant and a quiet family dinner on the other.

“Live entertainment, yes!” writes another on the Facebook page. “They have excellent food with weekly specials and a very friendly staff.”

Liz says the restaurant is “family-oriented, with kids coming in after football practice, dance recitals, hockey games— it’s safe-space and the prices won’t break the bank!”

She also hosts business meetings, birthday parties and other groups. “If you’re holding a fund raiser, then we’ll waive the usual fee for the room,” she says. She adds that her restaurant in Hopedale has supported Toys for Tots and Teens for years.

The two restaurants now employ a total of 21 people. “We’re always looking for passionate, experienced people to join our team,” says Liz.

One more comment from Facebook: “Love, love, love this place!”
