Elder Service Group News

On August 7, the Bellingham Elder Service Group (BESG) will host its monthly meal at the Senior Center, featuring a ham dinner, at 12 pm.

On Saturday, August 11, at 9 am, the BESG will sponsor a Meet and Greet to welcome our new executive director, Josie Dutil. Coffee and pastry is on us!

On August 30, the monthly birthday party will feature baked fish along with the birthday cake. Please join us to meet old friends and make new ones.

The Elder Service Group is in dire need of wheelchairs, transport chairs and shower curtains. “We can’t seem to keep these items in stock so if you can help us out, we would very much appreciate it,” said BESG President Bill Eltzroth.

Attention: Veterans

Every town in Massachusetts has a Veterans’ Service Officer. VSOs must assist veterans and their dependents in learning about, applying for, and receiving Chapter 115 benefits. VSOs can also help you in applying for, appealing, and receiving VA compensation and pension. Benefits available include cash assistance, medical expense reimbursements, annuities, and burial allowances.

Bob Greenhalgh is Bellingham’s Veterans Service Officer; you can reach him by calling 774-292-2437.

SHINE

Jean Roy is the SHINE counselor for the Bellingham Senior Center. She will be available on Wednesday, Aug. 8 and 22, 9am–12pm. SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) Program provides free health insurance information and counseling to all Massachusetts residents with Medicare and their caregivers. People who have Medicare or who are about to become eligible for Medicare can meet with Jean to learn about benefits and options available. She will review programs that help people with limited income pay for health care costs. Call the Senior Center at 508-966- 0398 to schedule an appointment. 

Wednesday Lunches

Any (or every!) Wednesday through August, 12–1 pm, stop by the Senior Center and enjoy lunch for $2. You will receive an entrée and beverage. The menu will vary and will include chili, “dynamites,” lasagna, American Chop Suey, and more. Please sign up at the front desk on Monday for the Wednesday lunch.

Art Anyone Can Paint

On Wednesdays, August 1 and 8, small groups learn to paint with internationally known artist Darrell Crow at the Senior Center, 1–3:30pm, This month, the painting is “Lake View,” a breathtaking view of a mountain pass in Maine. Class fee is $25; all supplies provided. Please sign up at the front desk.

Highlights of the 1960S

Thursday, August 2, and Tuesday, August 28, at 10:30 a.m. The first meeting will look back at LBJ’s Great Society. The second meeting will examine the 1968 national election. Gary Hylander is a professor with personal experience of living through the 1960s. Sign up at the front desk for either or both meetings. Free. 

Bereavement Support Group

On Thursday, August 2 and August 16, at 11:15 am, join with others who have experienced similar loss. Funded by a state grant administered by the Massachusetts Association for Councils on Aging and Senior Center Directors. Please call 508-966-0398 to sign up.

Blood Pressure Clinic

On Monday, August 6, 10am–12pm, Bellingham’s Public Health Nurse will take blood pressure readings at the Senior Center. There is no charge and no appointment is necessary 

Senior Safe

On Thursday, August 16, at 10 a.m., Brad Kwatcher, Safe Coordinator for the Bellingham Fire Department, will be at the Senior Center to discuss issues related to hoarding and clutter. 

Financial Consultations

On Thursday, August 16, 10 a.m.- 12 p.m., Gerald Loftin is available by appointment for free financial consultations. To schedule your consultation, sign up at the front desk or call the Senior Center at 508-966-0398. 

Blueberry Festival

Tuesday, August 21, 12:30 p.m. It’s blueberry season and time to celebrate! Joining us will be Patrick Hoye, who plays the guitar and sings songs from as far back as the 1920s, including oldies, country, folk, Italian and Irish. Call the Senior Center today to reserve your spot. Cost is $4 per person.

Music Concert

On August 30, 7-8:30 p.m., a concert will be held at the Senior Center featuring the group “b4 contemporary music.”
